So these are my ideas for the site.
There is a green dot on the users picture indicating that they are online at the time.
I added a mail button which could be used for chat, If you can get that to work like a chatroom not a message thing that would be amazing and really useful for talking to your followers.
You can add a mute option in the settings to stop people from being able to message you.
EDIT: To be more clear with the chat thing. By chatroom I mean automatically update the messages and not have to reload the page to see if there are new messages there
